Google Acquires Social Email Startup ‘Sparrow’
Google has been working endlessly to integrate Gmail into the realm of social media, for example users can now more easily connect their Gmail accounts to Google+. On Friday the company announced the acquisition of Mac OS X and iPhone social media startup Sparrow.
Sparrow created inboxes look more like Twitter feeds than email inboxes, using truncated messages that look like text messages more than full emails.
The startups messages then connect with Facebook which allows a sender’s picture to pop up with their messages while still retaining the feel of a private email inbox.
Sparrow co-founder and CEO Dom Leca wrote in a company blog post:
“We care a lot about how people communicate, and we did our best to provide you with the most intuitive and pleasurable mailing experience.
Now we’re joining the Gmail team to accomplish a bigger vision — one that we think we can better achieve with Google.”
The company also integrates with social file sharing company Dropbox in order to handle large files for personal and sharing purposes.
The deal which is reported to be worth nearly $25 million will see the Sparrow team join Google while still allowing Sparrow email users to keep their accounts.
