Newscorp totally stuffs up the MySpace community by attacking Myspace supporter sites

The worst case scenario for people concerned with Newscorp taking over Myspace has come true. The now Newscorp owned Myspace has sent out Cease & Desist To MySpace Domain Sites that actually support the Myspace service.

According to Search Engine Journal, the sites offer tools and downloads to a very loyal MySpace community including layouts, graphics and image hosting.

Ryan of MySpaceCity.com writes on SitePoint Forums:

‘€œI recieved a C&D aswell for MySpaceCity.com. They pretty much told me to shut down the site and give them the domain name. I will shut down the site and just direct the current traffic to a new domain.

I think is outrageous hense they are trying to claim damages while these sites promote MySpace so much everyday.

I am debating on either getting a lawyer and taking them to court, this will in return give me around 6 months more of my site running and collecting revenue, then just give them the domain, heh.

They have no right to take my domain name from me. They have the right to get the site shut down, that’€™s how I am looking at this.’€œ

Talk about bitting the hand that helps feeds you. These people are all individuals who are promoting and supporting the MySpace service. If this is how NewsCorp is going to treat MySpace fans and users, I can see other services providers picking up new members very, very quickly.

  • If this is accurate, this is very short sighted of News Corporation. There are thousands of sites that feed off of traffic and contribute traffic back. The smart thing would be for myspace to add the capabilities that these sites offer. (They could program this stuff in days). But, they certainly shouldn’t be shutting them down. That’s like google shutting down meta-search sites or a blog network shutting down an aggregator.

Myspace is an ecosystem which expands way beyond its site, where a lot of people rely on it to generate income directly through online advertising and for exposure for their acts and businesses. That’s vital to myspace’s existance.

  • If I had any thoughts of joining MySpace, they are pretty much disipating fast. I am sure other services over time would be able to pick up any exodus that Newscorp inspires, and it does seem that Newscorp is bent on alienating people.

  • I wonder if this has more to do with the use of the MySpace name or the actual supporting of MySpace. Not that I agree with their motives, but I can see someone locking down their brand image.

  • MySpace Bubble Has Popped (You Heard It Here First) – Ben Casnocha

“Big news: MySpace is now ‘out.’ People are flocking to Facebook’s high school edition. This is partly because everything is about what’s ‘in’ versus ‘out,’ but it’s also because of Facebook’s superior photo sharing technology.

In 6 months you’ll hear about MySpace losing membership in popular press. You heard it here…from the high school hallways…first.

  • Sites that have myspace layouts, codes, etc to help myspace.com i don’t think they should bother them … You think myspace even looked at the site … They better go look because it is helping them.

  • Well that’s great. I’m guessing that they are planning on being all inclusive and they’ll try to reap the rewards of the code demand. Problem is with limited resources for the community, people won’t want to get involved or stay. I hope this is just a scare and people stay and we don’t get shut down.
