3 Times Social Media and Cancel Culture Helped in Snuffing Out Racist ‘Karens’

July 23, 2020 by Sangalang Kristine

Various posts and memes about social media ‘Karens’ have surfaced recently on various video-sharing platforms. Karens, as has been officially defined, is a terminology used to describe a woman who shows excessive, inappropriate, and unnecessary entitlement or formidability. It is actually the first time that this kind of behavior has been given a ‘name’, albeit the prevalence of this behavior in the US for decades.

Based on the videos that went viral on the internet, there are two things that really tick off ‘Karens’. The first is the wearing of facemasks in public. The second issue Karens usually escalate is related to bigotry – be it gender, religion, race, or even age. White woman entitlement and racism were never put into highlight before, especially since hyper-focusing on these behaviors from women (White women specifically) is usually branded as sexist and racist.

The pandemic, added to the discussions of racial equality and police brutality, highlights how entitlement culture affects the American community. Because of this, Karen-spotting has become a national past time since the start of the pandemic. Here are a few of the most viral ‘Karens’ that was snuffed out and canceled widely on social media: [Read more…]

Independent Digital Media Is Being Shut Down Around the World, and We’re Being Distracted From It

July 15, 2020 by Sangalang Kristine

Amid the current global pandemic (also known as COVID-19), the shut down of independent digital media all over the world has started to become prevalent. Persecution by the government against critical journalists and media agencies are prevalent.

We are all distracted by the news. We seem to accidentally ignore the charges the government gives to its critics, including journalists and media outlets. Widespread criticisms, demands for accountability, and fact-based news – these are what political news websites show its readers. But crackdowns from authorities seem to hold news by the neck. Is this a sign of media shutdown and censorship?

All world leaders (and even celebrities) know that critics are a part of the package. No matter how great, or poor, a leader’s performance can be, there will always be an individual or a group of people who would not share the same visions and provide a critique to any action.

Will Your Blog be affected by the Current Facebook Ad Boycott?

July 9, 2020 by Sangalang Kristine

Just a few weeks ago, humanitarian brands like the North Face has decided to suspend their advertisements on the social media giant Facebook. This is after finding their advertisements being tagged or posted on hate speech content. Many brands are appalled by this discovery and immediately followed suit at temporarily suspending advertisements. Soon, big named brands like Honda, Coca-Cola, and Unilever (among others) decided to also suspend their advertisement on the platform. Thus, the #StopHateforProfit movement was created.

This is not the first time Facebook was canceled by many brands and users. The company has its own fair share of blunders and controversy. However, this might be the only time when Facebook is seriously threatened, especially financially. Earlier this week, Facebook CEO has announced all changes that would be made to address the current issues.

Now, many bloggers and influencers are nervous that the widespread Facebook ad boycott will severely affect them. However, from the current developments, it looks like they would not be affected much. So, should all these current events worry bloggers and influencers?
