Google Acquires Meebo, Rumors Point To $100 Million Buyout
Social chat and sharing platform Meebo is now part of the Google family after the search giant reportedly paid upwards of $100 million to acquire the service.
Meebo has been online for seven years, beginning as an web browser based chat service that eventually morphed into a social links sharing powerhouse. In many ways Meebo was one of the first and arguably a pioneer in the social web. Companies flocked to the service as a way to connect their customers to their services and connect their employees to their customers.
At this time Google has not explained how it will use Meebo to its advantage however further Meebo Bar integration with Google+ could expose millions of new users to Google’s social networking platform.
The Meebo Bar over the years has been featured on some of the biggest websites in the world with its newest version recently launching on Slate.com, the Mad Men website for AMC and among other big name web properties.
As part of the buyout some of Meebo’s staff will be sent packing while other members will join Google.
Here’s the short acquisition post Meebo posted on its official blog:
We are happy to announce that Meebo has entered into an agreement to be acquired by Google!
For more than seven years we’ve been helping publishers find deeper relationships with their users and to make their sites more social and engaging. Together with Google, we’re super jazzed to roll up our sleeves and get cracking on even bigger and better ways to help users and website owners alike.
We’ve had a blast building Meebo so far and we’re really excited to start the next leg of our journey.
Thank you all for coming along for the ride!
Do you think Meebo has found a good home at Google or will it end up as another product that eventually dies off under the bureaucracy of a big name tech firm?
