Squarespace Dethrones WordPress On iPhone
After initially exposing the world to their iPhone app, it looks like the boys and girls at Squarespace have released an update that will make WordPress fans jealous.
While the Squarespace iPhone app already allowed users to view their blog’s stats, the team decided to go one step further in order to make the iPhone app truely useful for those blogging on the go.
Comment Moderation. This has been a very long time coming, but hey, anything worth doing is worth doing well, right? Moderate existing comments, reply to comments, approve comments, mark comments as spam, and email comment authors directly from the app.
Push Notifications. Yes, this is technically part of comments, but it deserves its own bullet. New comments and/or comments awaiting moderation will now send a push notification to your device. New comments will also pop a pretty badge onto the app’s icon if you ignore the push notification. (Official Squarespace Blog)
Note: Emphasis theirs.
Other features mentioned include various improvements when editing a post, as well as the ability to (finally!) create a blog post in landscape mode. The video below displays Squarespace’s comment moderation in action, which is similar to WordPress’s iPhone app.
Even though WordPress iFans can receive similar features by downloading Statistics for WordPress as well as Comment Push (the latter which is free), users may not enjoy having to switch back and forth between multiple apps.
Automattic (the company behind WordPress) is planning on resolving the situation with a massive update to their iPhone app, which should help them regain their lead against Squarespace (not to mention LiveJournal as well).
Squarespace has not yet revealed when they will create similar apps for Android and Blackberry smartphones (the former which users are demanding), although for now the company can enjoy their spotlight as king of the blogging apps (at least upon the iPhone).
Updated: Corrected one word for clarity.
Darnell Clayton is a geek who discovered blogging long before he heard of the word "blog" (he called them "web journals" then). When he is not tweeting, friendfeeding, or blogging about space, he enjoys running, reading and describing himself in third person.
having the stats feature embeded directed into the apps is different when you use multiple apps. this will surely help people to keep track of the vistors and the most accessed contents.
“the latter which users are demanding”
I think you meant the former. The article you link to is all about Android (I was going to be pleasantly surprised if Blackberry users were seriously demanding this).
i think the iphone users really need this.It’s easy to manage your WordPress blog from your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. With WordPress for iPhone OS, you can moderate comments and create or edit posts and pages. All you need is a WordPress.com blog or a self-hosted blog running WordPress 2.9.2 or higher.
@eak4: Thanks! Corrected article above.
