Twitter Might Help You Lose Weight, Study Finds

Twitter Weight LossWant to trim a few pounds off your waistline? According to a new study Twitter is actually helping many users lose weight.

Published by researchers at the University of South Carolina’s Arnold School of Public Health the report claims that Twitter’s support system has given people the motivation they need to drop their extra pounds. The study examined an op-in weight loss program which encouraged Twitter users to receive and share information about weight loss and their own goals.

According to the study every 10 posts to Twitter by the test group results in another 0.5% weight loss per participant. While many weight loss intervention programs already exist, such as Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig, they are often more expensive and time consuming for participants.

If this study holds true the next big weight loss fade could literally involve sitting down in front of your computer for a little bit of time each day.  [Read more…]

Yet many social users may be surprised to learn that the top tweeting city isn’t in the United States.

Forbes contributor Victor Lipman recently analysts millions of tweets to determine Twitter’s global usage patterns and what he learned was that Jakarta, Indonesia Twitter users are actually the most active on the social platform.

Together the two company’s hope to create a TV measurement system that brings ratings to the twenty first century.

The new ratings metric will debut in Fall 2013 and while the Nielsen’s rating system will remain in place it will be complemented by new Twitter data that is presented on top of the SocialGuide platform created by NM Incite.

Flickr on Wednesday announced a set of its own photo filters, the platform was created by the Aviary, the same company that provided an SDK package for Twitter’s recently announced photo filters.

On its blog Aviary writers:

“Now, all Flickr users, on web and mobile, can make their photos look amazing with Aviary’s tools, filters and effects.”

Twitter Shortener Services Leads to Shorter Tweets AllowedIf you can’t collect your thoughts in 140 characters you might soon find yourself with 23 less. Twitter is planning to cut down URL containing tweets from 118 characters for HTTP links and just 117 for HTTPS containing URLs.

Currently a Tweet can scale to 119 characters when a Twitter URL shortener is used.

On Thursday Twitter announced the movie, noting that it was necessary because of upcoming changes to the Twitter link wrapper. The new revision extends wrapped links from 20 to 22 characters for HTTP URLS and 21 to 23 characters for HTTPS links.

Because Twitter’s shortener service will now use more space Twitter will give up some space from a customers Tweets.  [Read more…]

Twitter will give away $1 million in free ad credits to 10,000 small businesses on Saturday November 24.

The $100 in free credits per business will be offered to the first 10,000 businesses who apply and meet eligibility requirements for the program.

The money from the program can be used to purchase ad credits towards  Promoted Trends and Promoted Accounts on Twitter.

To qualify for the free $100 in advertising the business must be US based, be active on Twitter and be new to Twitter advertising. [Read more…]
